Our Coaching Staff

Athletic Director

Randy Krutch

Head Softball Coach

Coach Randy Krutsch enters his 6th season as the Head Coach of the Lady Rough Riders softball program, and 4rd year as the Athletic Director.  Prior to coming to Luna, he was the Assistant Head Coach at Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas.  After the pandemic, Coach Randy came to Luna as the Assistant Coach and was promoted to Head Coach that December '21. Since taking over as the Head Coach, Coach Randy has methodically been building a program that has now garnished national attention and has become well-respected by some of the best programs in the country.  Building a program that has produced an All-American, National Player of the Year, national Records and multiple All-Region athletes and more Academic All-Region students. As the Athletic Director, Coach Randy has instituted a "New Mexico First" recruiting policy giving New Mexico student athletes first opportunity to stay in their home state and take advantage of the lower cost of higher education.  To date, Coach Randy has developed an athletic program that boasts over 85% New Mexico athletes and has awarded over 100 degrees to athletes.  Focusing on academics at Luna, Coach Randy has grown the cumulative GPA of all athletes.  Coach Randy has had the opportunity to coach teams in Italy, Greece and Australia. Coach Randy has been married to Valerie for 33 years and have 3 children together.

Assistant Coach

Elisha Velasquez

Softball

Coach Elisha is in her third year as Luna’s Assistant Coach. Coach Elisha played two years at Luna and was a starting pitcher for both seasons. In her time as a pitcher for the Rough Riders she amassed over 250 career strikeouts and is the all time strike out leader for career and single season. Her sophomore year, she set school records in strike outs, innings pitched, shut outs, wins. She ended her playing career as an All-Conference pitcher and ranked 6 in the country. She currently serves the program as the pitching coach and calls pitches in games.  She is a great example of diligence, competitive nature and hard work to the players in the program.

Assistant Coach

Angelica Ortiz

Softball

Coach Jel as she is known to the team came to Luna as a transfer from Adams State four years ago as an athletic Freshman and is in her third season as an Assistant Coach. Coach Jel played two years at Luna and was a starting catcher or a starting 3rd baseman for both seasons. In Coach Jel’s time as a Rough Rider, she earned Honorable Mention All-Conference her freshman year as a catcher and 1st team All-American as well as earning the remarkable feat of setting the single season home run record as well as runs batted in in a single season.  Capping off her career at Luna setting the all-time career home run record of 66. Coach Jel works with catchers and outfielders for the Luna team.

Head Baseball Coach

Chad Brown

Baseball

Chad Brown enters his first full season as Head Coach of the Luna Roughriders. Coach Brown has worked with offense and infielders over the last 9 seasons. In 7 of his 9 years as a hitting coach he has led the offense to hit over .300 as a team. To go along with that Coach Brown has also produced 3 All-Americans in that time, while 2 of those coming while being a Head Coach. Coach Brown has moved on over 85 student athletes to four-year universities. Brown spent two seasons playing at Frank Phillips before transferring to West Texas A&M. As a freshman at Frank Phillips, Brown helped the team to a 34-22 record while making it to a Regional Tournament. In Brown's two years at West Texas, he was a part of two Conference Tournament Championships and two Regional Tournament berths. As a senior at West Texas, he was a part of a team that was ranked as high as fourth in the nation while also winning a Gold Glove as a infielder in the Lonestar Conference.

The Athletics Department proudly celebrates our 2026 graduating softball seniors as they step off the diamond and up to the plate of their next big future. We are honored to recognize these student-athletes as they receive their Associate Degree Diplomas from President Dr. Carol Linder.
