Luna softball team on six-game winning streak; Ortiz first in nation in home runs...


Luna Community College’s softball team is on a six game winning streak and are 9-9 on the year. Over the weekend, the Lady Rough Riders beat Colorado Northwestern Community College 14-0, 23-15, 15-2 and 20-0.

The Lady Rough Riders have won six consecutive games.

“The team played well, it’s hard to beat a team that scores 72 runs in four games,” said Luna head coach Randall Krutsch. “The team is really working together and playing really well right now. It’s an exciting time to watch them play.”

The Lady Rough Riders play Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas today and then play at home on Friday and Saturday against El Paso Community College. Home games are played at Rodriguez Field.

As a team, the Lady Rough Riders are among the statistical leaders in the National Junior College Athletic Association. Luna is ninth in the nation in runs at 182, 13th in hits at 195, 23rd in doubles at 35, seventh in home runs with 29, ninth in RBI’s with 168, ninth in total bases with 325, ninth in walks with 45 and 12th in on base percentage at .484.

Angelica Ortiz is first in home runs at 18, first in RBI’s at 64 and fourth in batting average at .610. Elisha Velasquez is tied for 12th in wins with six. Both Ortiz is and Velasquez are sophomores from Albuquerque.
