Luna Community College to sponsor Tech Prep Summer Program for 20th year
In a continued effort to enhance summer educational opportunities for area high school juniors, seniors and graduating seniors preparing for science, math and technology careers, Luna Community College will sponsor the 20th year of its Tech Prep Summer Program which will run from Monday, June 2 to Friday, July 25.
The LCC Tech Prep Summer Program is designed to introduce students to college, strengthen math, science and technology skills, enhance career development and give students the opportunity to earn college credit. College credits can be applied toward an associate degree at Luna Community College and are also transferable to four-year colleges or universities.
“The Tech Prep Summer Program has been a tremendous benefit to students and their families,” said LCC Tech Prep Summer Program Coordinator LouElla Marr Montoya. “The program is dedicated to enhancing educational opportunities for students in preparing for college and encourages students to pursue higher education. Besides focusing on math, science and technology, the program provides supplemental academic assistance to students. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to challenge themselves, to grow academically, and explore careers.”
Qualifying students will complete course work in physics, along with participating in technology-related field trips/tours and college prep seminars.
Participating high schools are: Robertson High, West Las Vegas High, Santa Rosa High, Springer High, Maxwell High, Mora High and Wagon Mound High.
The LCC Tech Prep Summer Program will provide students with tuition, registration, lab fees and books. In addition, students will receive academic counseling, career counseling and tutoring.
To apply for the LCC Tech Prep Summer Program, students must complete an application that is available at the high school counseling offices, the LCC ACCESS Center or the LCC Dual Credit Office. Students must be in good standing with their high school and certain ACT, SAT or COMPASS scores must be met.
“Many participants have elected to return for a second and third summer of college courses,” said Marr Montoya. “By high school graduation, these participants are ready to keep up with the demands of college courses. They have learned some of the academic process and strategies for creating success in college, and they have earned college credit which can be applied to a baccalaureate and/or associate degree. This year, a few of the former participants will be walking the graduation line with LCC before receiving their high school diploma.”
The Luna Community College Tech Prep Summer Program courses include: college algebra, intermediate algebra, trigonometry, computer systems troubleshooting, digital electronics circuits, electronics I, engineering graphics & basic autoCAD, introduction to architectural drafting, intermediate architectural drafting, advanced drafting & design, computer fundamentals, introduction to internet, introduction to operating systems, introduction to networking, Microsoft excel and Microsoft access.

“I look forward to my 20th summer in working with the fine students from LCC’s service area,” said Marr Montoya. “The significant reward has been the many students who have received their college degrees and are working in successful careers, including: engineering, education, technical areas of electronics, drafting, computer programming, computer information systems, nursing, business and other careers in trades and industry.”
At the end of last year’s program, both students and parents were asked to give comments about the program. Here is a sampling of the feedback.
“I have taken part in Tech Prep for three summers and each summer was well worth it,” said one student.
Another student said: “I thought that this year’s Tech Prep was as good as always. I can’t think of any suggestions on how to improve it; it’s already good enough.”
One parent said of the program. “My daughter enhanced her math and science skills because of the Tech Prep program. She also improved her self esteem; she now knows she can succeed in any field.” “It is fortunate that LCC continues to advocate for its service area high school students through programs such as the Tech Prep Summer. The longevity of the program is a credit to the LVTI/LCC administrations, faculty and staff have who have played a major role in making this program a success for the last 19 years,” said Marr Montoya.
