Las Vegas, N.M--Dr. Pete Campos officially signed a contract to become Luna Community College’s next president Saturday at the campus in Las Vegas.
Dr. Campos officially begins his tenure as president of Luna Community College on July 1. The contract, for five years, comes with an annual salary of $150,000. Dr. Sigfredo Maestas will continue to serve as interim president until June 30.
“We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Campos as president for the next five years,” said LCC Board of Trustees President Ambrose Castellano. “We expect a lot of great things under his leadership; there are a lot of expectations. We are confident he will move Luna Community College forward.”
Dr. Campos is currently the superintendent at Las Vegas City Schools, a position he’s held since 2004. He has also been a state senator since 1991.
“I wish Dr. Campos and Luna Community College a long string of success over a long period of time,” said Dr. Maestas. “This wish is apt to come true with Dr. Campos at the helm of the institution.”
During the months of March and April, Dr. Campos, in tandem with several LCC personnel, have visited with several northern New Mexico high schools.
“I want to thank the Luna Community College Board of Trustees for their leadership and their high expectations,” said Dr. Campos. “I am looking forward to working with the expert faculty, staff and dedicated students. I am asking everyone to recommit themselves to new ideas, new concepts and a new direction; this will have a direct tie to our initial and future success.”
Dr. Campos wants to have a grassroots approach to his presidency.
“We need to be committed to the success of the northeastern region of our state; it is our mission to educate this current generation. It is important for the well being of our students that we provide educational rigor and economic opportunity. We will prepare this generation of learners to meet their family needs. We can never forget this is a ‘community college’ and it is paramount we remain committed to community. This is a college that works for the people and I want opportunity for all of our people.”
Initially, Dr. Campos wants to focus on current and new programs, infrastructure of the college as well as facilities.
“It all comes back to stability,” said Dr. Campos.“We need strategic planning and a vision that goes along with it. It’s not only going to take hard work but team work from everyone at Luna Community College. Our vision is to have a top-notch professional group that provides educational services to the community for both recent high school graduates and adult learners. We have pride in our college, community and region and the services we provide. It’s important that we are transparent of our operations and services.”
