Amanda Brown-Diaz made history with Luna Community College on Monday. She became the first player to sign a national letter of intent to play softball for the school.
Luna Community College, located in Las Vegas, will sponsor a softball team beginning in the fall of 2008.
“It’s exciting to be the first player to sign at Luna Community College,” said Brown Diaz. “I like the fact that Luna Community College will be recruiting New Mexico players. There are a lot of talented players that play softball in this state.”
Brown-Diaz, a senior, plays third base at Onate High in Las Cruces.
“I feel fortunate to continue to play the game I love,” said Brown-Diaz. “It’s great not to be limited to a high school career.”
Brown-Diaz says she would like to play two years with Luna Community College and then transfer to a four-year school.
“This is a start to a new beginning,” said LCC Softball Coach Dawnette Garcia. “I want to keep the majority of the recruiting in New Mexico. Many New Mexico student-athletes get overlooked and we want to give them an opportunity to play at the next level.”
Luna Community College also has a baseball team. They are in their third season.
